Junior Triathlon News

An information event will be taking place on Wednesday 12th February, at Tatton Community Centre, Chorley 7-8pm. You should have received information about this from Daryl, our Club Chair, last week. If you can't make the event, but are interested in triathlon, please contact chorleytri.junior@gmail.com directly so you can be included in newsletters and added to training lists. You don't need to take up all the club training sessions, to compete or get involved in triathlon e.g. if you swim for a club you don't also need to attend Brinscall pool sessions.

We're expecting GB Triathlete, and local sportswoman, Katie Hewison to attend as the section's Ambassador, along with some of the senior triathletes from the club. You can purchase Triathlon England membership (senior & junior memberships) at a discounted rate on the night. A calendar of events has been set up for triathlon section, and can be viewed at: https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=chorleytri.junior%40gmail.com&ctz=Europe/London

North West Junior Series

Please follow this link for information on the 2014 North West Junior Triathlon Series.

www.triathlonengland.org/north-west/athletes/junior-series

As you can see the series starts off with Aquathlons which is Swim then Run. There is one Duathlon (Run, Bike and run again). Then triathlon (Swim, bike then run.)

Best 8 races to count in the series and a minimum of 4 counting races must be completed to be eligible for a prize. No more than 4 of the counting races can be Aquathons or Duathlons. This is for the Tristar and Youth categories.

Sprint and Super Sprint Races

If you are new to the sport or trying out triathlon there are categories you can compete in which are shorter distances. However they do not count toward the series explained above. Some of these races do not allow road bikes for example so everyone is on even pegging. They are brilliant for experiencing what a triathlon/aqualthlon/duathlon is all about without as much pressure as the North West series.

This is as example of the categories from a race last year - www.boltontri.com/advive/bolton-junior-aquathon-2013

Training for these events

As many of you are aware I am the lead coach for triathlon in the junior section of the club and a small team of us from the club have been working very hard with the council and Triathlon England to get it up and running. Currently we have the swim session secured and starting this week, coached by Jonathan Grundy. The cycling session is 'coming soon' dependent on when we get equipment, and will be coached by Steve Thomas.

Also - Like last summer we will plan to do spot cycling sessions on the Thursday session in Astley Park.

If you want to secure a place at training sessions please contact chorleytri.junior@gmail.com. It is first come first served; members take priority for now, we will soon be doing some promotion outside of the club so if you are interested make sure you book your child's place asap before all the places go!

If you want to enter any of the races please contact me and we can discuss how best to train and if any coaches are able to come with you on the day (due to personal work commitments not always guaranteed I am available on weekends.) Now we have more coaches in the section and regular triathletes attending the events I am anticipating plenty of support for our triathletes.

Kind regards.

Nicola Rothwell (nee Ingram)
