Junior Triathlon News

Latest News December 2013

You may be aware that the club is working towards setting up training sessions for juniors wishing to develop & try out triathlon. We're delighted to announce that we expect to start these sessions after Christmas now the coaching structure is in place.

Triathlon is made up of 3 events - swim, cycle and run, but there are many events with only 2 disciplines, so you don't have to always do 3 events.

The club has secured pool time for swim training, at Brinscall Pool, and the lead coach will be Jonathan Grundy. Jonathan has been a Marlins competitive swimmer, and now does triathlons himself, so is keen to pass on his expertise as lead swim coach.

The bike training will be on Wednesday night at Tatton Community Centre. Time to be confirmed. The centre will be used during winter months, and we're hoping to get turbo trainers for indoor training (a bid is being submitted to Sport England for funding equipment). The lead coach is an experienced coach, Steve Thomas, who also enjoys competing in running and triathlon events.

The run training will be part of the endurance running sessions on Monday at Holy Cross, and Thursday at Parklands.

Nicola Rothwell will be the overall lead coach for Triathlon development, working with Lisa Johnson to support junior development overall in the club.

Please can you indicate if your child/ren would like a place at run/bike/swim sessions, so that the coaches can start planning their group work. The triathlon sessions will be opened up to non-members in the next couple of weeks. We will be working on half term basis for the bike and swim sessions, so that all places are used.

Preference will go to secondary school pupils, but as discussed at the parents meeting, juniors of all ages will get a taster of all disciplines throughout the year. Even if a junior doesn't train in a discipline, they can still compete.

The club will be encouraging juniors to compete in the North West Junior triathlon series.

There is no qualifying entry to any of these training sessions, apart from being able to swim 25m unaided for the swim session. Hopefully, all those juniors that have said "I can't swim", will be encouraged to give it a go if they're interested! Please do indicate the level of swim proficiency e.g. has 100m badge, National standards Level x, or swim club competitior until recently.

Please respond to the separate email: chorleytri.junior@gmail.com as soon as you've chatted about it. A flyer is attached to share with friends & schools in your area.

T-J Hughes is the main administrator for this section at the moment, although there will be a need for other volunteers to support each of the sessions.

We're all very excited about this development, and hope you will encourage those who may be interested to get in touch.

T-J, Nic, Jonathan & Steve
