'Chorley's senior athletes had the joy of arriving at Witton Park, Blackburn to find their U11 juniors dancing in the car park with their excited parents having all medaled after securing 2nd teams respectively in the Lancashire XC Championships. The boys were led home by Ben Hughes in 9th place, Scott Gouldthorpe(17th) had a vest width on Luke Hunter(18th) with the same times, Jack Hughes(25th), Henry Wilson(30th) and Cai Smith(33rd). In the girls Caitlin McCarrick(11th) had a good race ahead of Emily Hunter(20th), Maddison Bretherton(25th), Charlotte Lavin(26th) and Emily Watson(31st). None of these juniors would have won an individual prize but they have now really learnt the lesson that working as a team and all turning up has gained them medals as the 2nd best teams in Lancashire. Other juniors who ran well without the benefit of being in a team were U13s Jack Wilson(24th) and Evie Barclay(22nd) with U17s Nick Fowler(19th) and Byron Baker(27th). It would seem that the Chorley seniors are not as conversant with team ethics as the juniors and a disappointing turn out had no ladies at all although the competing men all ran particularly well with Adam Sciacca(36th) pushed by Michael Chalfont(41st) and Ryan Sciacca(70th). William Beckett(81st) improves with every race keeping ahead of Dave Kershaw(101st), Simon Townsend(113th), Paul Jackson(117th) and Henry Minorczyk(119th). Barry Chester(123rd) had another good race heading off fell man Graham Schoffield(126th) and new man Stephen Baker(128th). Phil McCullagh(139th) fronted the fighting Vet65s where Les Paul(140th) escaped from Tom Hilton(141st) who captured Mike Coppin(142nd) in the last 20 yds. Generally the fields were much larger this year with immense quality through all the age categories so Chorley's runners did well to gain 8th team overall and the 6th vet team, but only had one senior individual medalist with Henry as 3rd V65 and Barry Chester an unlucky 4th V60 just missing out. It was nice to see two former Chorley athletes winning medals with Luke Betts(now Sale) as 3rd junior man and Steve Watson(now Buxton) as 1st V45.
Also thanks to all that attended from the club and organisers; the men's team made up 10% of the race numbers!
