Tockholes (6) fell race

Michael Chalfont led an eight-strong Chorley field home in a superb fifth place at the local Tockholes fell race on Saturday.

In a change to the recent prevailing weather, blue skies met runners as they lined up to start beside the village school in Rock Lane. After the initial charge through the village and a canter down through Sunnyhurst woods, the tough climb up to Darwen Tower punished those of us unaccustomed to running in the sun.

After the recent heavy rains, the descent had been rerouted to counter the effects of erosion - adding unwelcome metres in the sapping heat! Homeward bound, the Roddlesworth trail offered some welcome shade through the woods, before the final slog across the farms with that finish line water butt soon in sight!

Michael was chased home by Darren Fishwick (11th) in his second fell race of the day, following the morning's exploits across at Heptonstall. Second lady Lynne Clough (14) was chased by the pair of Hassan Khattab (18) and Dawn Atkins (19), all with fantastic runs.

Further back, Michael Hendry (38) just managed to hold off Paul Jackson (42) - also completing a "double" after his earlier outing at Heptonstall - and Glyn Denver (53) completed the story for Chorley.
