Welcome to our athletics training.

What do we provide?

We are a grass roots club that focuses on providing juniors the chance to acquire the important skills of Fundamental movement through the foundation development and onto event group.

The aim is to enable our athletes to become focussed and accomplished through all aspects of running, jumping and throwing; whilst maintaining the key core, agility, balance, coordination and speed work that drive all athletic movements.

It's not just about how fast you can run, or how high you can jump, or how far you can throw. It's about the best way to do all of these efficiently, effectively, with understanding and the desire to focus and build from those skills. Alongside these skills, you will also learn how to get fit and get in the right state of mind to do your best.

To do this you need to have the right attitude and behaviours these are - listening, learning and applying and with this will come improvement.

Questioning is also important both from the athlete and the coach and needs to be done at an appropriate time during the session. Remember you are not the only athlete on the track or Sportshall!

Learning how to be good at athletics can also help you feel more confident in life.


Safety is paramount at all times and athletes need to adhere to the code of conduct of the club. This includes behaviours at all venues, looking where you are and your surroundings.

You need to be on time as sessions will need to start on time. We cannot have athletes running around the Sportshall or Track or on an outbound activity unsupervised and whilst sessions are being set up for you. On arrival you should report direct to your coach and make them aware of any injuries, what sports sessions you have already done that week and be ready to focus on the session planned.


During Autumn (after October half term) and Winter (until Easter half term) we use two sports halls.

Monday - Holy Cross High School

  • Fundamentals - 18:00 to 18:45
  • Foundation/EGD - 19:00 to 20:00
  • Thursday - Parklands High School

  • Fundamentals/Foundation/EGD - 18:30 to 19:30
  • Spring (after Easter Monday) through to the end of Summer (October) we will use outside facilities.

    Monday - Holy Cross High school - either Grass running track outside or Sportshall

  • Fundamentals - 18:00 to 18:45
  • Foundation/EGD - 18:30 to 20:00
  • Thursday - Astley Park - meeting at Highfield carpark in Astley Village, opposite the Barons rest.

  • Fundamentals/Foundation/EGD - 18:30 to 20:00
  • Thursday - Horwich running track, Bolton Arena (group rota basis) only when told to according to specific training planned sessions. YOU CAN NOT JUST TURN UP TO THIS.

  • Fundamentals/Foundation/EGD - 18:30 to 19:30

  • normally focussed on children under 6/9
  • develop broad movement experience (ABC) Agility, Balance Coordination and Speed
  • competition should be fun and not focused on the outcome
  • fun and game based learning through experience
  • most important - time to develop basic movement and coordination skills whilst introducing them to the spirit/ethics of sport

  • all ages, but especially, 9-12 developmental age group
  • emerging gender differences, early/late maturers
  • progression from Fundamentals stage to sport skills focus

  • move towards event groups at later stages
  • focus on learning about training (frequency and volume), not competitive outcome. This statement does not mean that you can't compete it's focus is around you still developing to improve

    Athletics Activities

    Running, jumping and throwing are the main events that you might think of whilst considering athletics. To complete the above there are various different key stages that your body goes through to be able to apply each discipline correctly and efficiently.

    The main driver in each of these areas is your core. The centre of your core is normally just above your belly button (the centre of your body). Your core is key to the development of :

  • Balance and Stability - this includes direction/plane of movement, correct positioning of base, positioning of centre and height of centre and postural stability and control through your neutral spine and neutral pelvis.
  • Coordination - Organising Limbs to generate force, maximise movement efficiency and force application, apply force for longer, generate more force - this can lead into complexity of movement but can depend on individual athlete.
  • Through a combination of planned sessions/activities we will look to improve the above and look at the technical skills of running, jumping and throwing. Your coach will have set out a training plan for a period of 6-8 weeks (mesocycle) that will incorporate physical preparation and practise to achieve specific goals across the athletic spectrum.

    Application and Recording Achievements

    These skills can be then applied in different arenas to show and record your development.

    This is done either:

  • Through your coach's specific training plan and assessment during or at the end of that mesocycle.
  • Record of achievement - clubs or athletes own log.
  • Competition records from Track and Field, Cross Country, Sportshall or Triathlon.
  • Events and Awards

    During the sporting calendar there are several events for our athletes to attend and apply their learning/skills. These are and usually held during:

  • Sportshall - December, January and February.
  • Cross Country - October to March
  • Track & Field - March to September
  • Trail running - March to September
  • Fell running - various throughout year
  • Multi events - Triathlon/Aquathlon & Duathlon - March to September
  • We encourage athletes to participate in a number of mixed events until they are at least past the EGD stage.


    It is important to always be prepared for the event you are attending, including training.

  • Suitable running shoes - no converse, pumps or football trainers.
  • Suitable running clothing - t-shirt (preferably club colours), vest (definitely club colours), hoodie, shorts, leggings and socks
  • Hi-viz coat/bib - luminous yellow
  • Hat and gloves (winter)
  • Water bottle
  • Food (when entering events)
  • Training/Event log
  • It is worth writing your name inside your clothing and on bottles as they can be easily misplaced/mixed up in the Sportshall or on Track
