Overview

Your leadership style is your preferred pattern of behaviour that you exhibit when you attempt to influence the activities of people. This behaviour has been developed over time and is what others learn to recognise in you, the leader, as your chosen style contributing to your leadership practice. Others can expect and can even predict certain kinds of behaviour from you.

Two types of behaviour are central to the concept of leadership style:
1. The extent to which a leader organises and defines the roles of individuals and members of their team by explaining what activities each is to do as well as when, where and how tasks are to be accomplished.
2. The extent to which a leader supports and engages in personal relationships with individuals or members their team; the amount of help, encouragement, contact and advice given as well as the amount of time spent listening to their ideas.
A leader’s style will usually involve a combination of task behaviour (high / low direction) and supportive behaviour (high / low support) which can be classified into 4 leadership styles as shown below in the Effectively Leading People model:
